Achieving a ‘light and airy’ kitchen

Like most rooms in the home, we all strive to create a cosy and intimate feel.

Like most rooms in the home, we all strive to create a cosy and intimate feel. The one case where there is an exception has to be the kitchen.

Most of us want to keep the kitchen as light and airy as possible. If you are fortunate enough to have large windows or even patio doors in the kitchen, the natural light will automatically provide a more spacious feel to the room.

Don’t stifle this feel with heavy curtains and blinds; make a feature of it as much as possible. Maybe even try strategically placed mirrors and frames to really emphasise this natural light. If you want to create a feeling of space and maximise the area you have, the lighter the colour scheme the better.

Try shades of white or even a lemon yellow. Tiles are also a good option as they reflect light and create an illusion of greater space. Mosaic tiles are also good for feature areas such as the splash back.

White marble will always give the impression of room and space in the kitchen and Quarella worktops have proven to be one of the most popular providers of marble in recent years.

Fittings are also vital when achieving your desired look. Again, a light colour scheme for units and cupboards is vital. Wood gives a nice effect, especially pine and it’s a nice idea to try replacing flat unit doors with slat or shutter doors.

You could try open shelving units; not only is this a practical storage option but it also allows you to display some of your kitchen accessories. The same goes for replacing cupboard doors with glass to really open up your units to become more of a feature of the room.

It goes without saying that if you are planning on employing light colours and light furniture you will need a worktop that compliments this scheme.  Compac worktops offer a great range of natural stone finishes. Stone such as granite is as popular as ever and fits in with most colour schemes.

Diresco worktops offer a stunning collection of quartz worktops in a range of colours to suit any design.
